Why This Gonzales Heat Pump Was Heating Instead of Cooling

A heat pump that produces heat while the thermostat is calling for cooling can make it seem like the thermostat or a major component has failed. During a recent service call in Gonzales, Louisiana, however, the problem was not what had previously been diagnosed.
The homeowner had been told that the system needed a new capacitor. After testing the capacitor and inspecting the complete system, we found that the capacitor was still operating within its expected range. Before we arrived, another company had reportedly recommended replacing the capacitor at a cost of approximately $400.
The installed component was a 30/5 microfarad dual-run capacitor. On this particular system, the 5-microfarad fan section was not being used because the outdoor fan had an ECM motor.
We tested the 30-microfarad compressor section and measured 29.2 microfarads. That reading showed that the capacitor was still operating within its expected range.
Replacing it would not have corrected the heat pump’s failure to switch into cooling mode.
This is why an accurate air-conditioning diagnostic should include actual electrical measurements instead of replacing a component based only on the symptoms.
Why Was the Heat Pump Producing Heat During a Cooling Call?
A heat pump uses a reversing valve to change the direction of refrigerant flow. That allows the same equipment to provide both heating and cooling.
On this system, the reversing valve needed to be energized for cooling. The outdoor equipment was starting, but the 24-volt electrical plug had vibrated completely off the reversing-valve solenoid.
Without that electrical connection, the valve remained in its heating position even though the thermostat was calling for cooling.
We reattached and secured the plug, then operated the system to confirm that the reversing valve shifted and the equipment began cooling properly.
A system that heats during a cooling call does not automatically have a failed thermostat or a mechanically failed reversing valve. The problem may be a disconnected plug, damaged wire, failed solenoid coil, control issue, or valve problem. Each possibility must be tested.

A Refrigerant Leak Was Also Affecting Performance
Correcting the reversing-valve connection restored the proper operating mode, but the diagnostic did not stop there.
Further testing showed that the system was low on refrigerant. We located a leak at a coupling in the 3/4-inch suction line. The connection was part of an area where the refrigerant lines had been extended during the original installation.
We repaired the leaking connection and tested the repaired area to confirm that it was properly sealed. We then added three pounds of R-410A refrigerant and checked system operation.
A refrigerant leak can reduce cooling capacity, increase runtime, affect coil temperature, and limit the system’s ability to remove moisture from the air. In a tightly sealed or spray-foamed home, reduced moisture removal can become especially noticeable.

The disconnected reversing-valve plug caused the system to operate in the wrong mode. The refrigerant leak created a separate performance problem. The capacitor, despite being blamed previously, tested properly.
Had only the capacitor been replaced, the heat pump would still have been heating during the cooling call. It also would have remained low on refrigerant.
