AC Repair Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

Possible causes include a dirty filter, frozen evaporator coil, low refrigerant, a refrigerant leak, failed capacitor, dirty outdoor coil, airflow problem, thermostat issue, electrical failure, or compressor problem.

Should I turn my AC off if it freezes up?

Yes. Turn the cooling system off and allow the ice to thaw. Continuing to run a frozen air conditioner can make the problem worse.

How much does AC repair cost?

The cost depends on the failed component, system condition, access, parts, and labor required. Air Innovations provides upfront pricing before approved repair work begins.

Why is water leaking around my indoor AC unit?

Common causes include a clogged condensate drain, damaged drain piping, a dirty or frozen coil, improper drainage, or water being pulled from the drain pan.

Why does my AC keep turning on and off?

Frequent cycling can be related to thermostat problems, airflow restrictions, electrical issues, an oversized system, refrigerant problems, or a system safety control.

AC Drain and Refrigerant Repair in Pelican Point

Diagnosed an air-conditioning system in the Pelican Point subdivision after water was found overflowing from an open condensate drain tee. The water was bypassing the evaporator coil drain pan and spilling into the emergency drain pan. Cleared the condensate drain using pressurized nitrogen and capped the open stack so future overflow will be directed into the emergency drain pan, where the safety switch can shut the system down. Checked refrigerant pressures and found the system low on R-410A refrigerant. Added refrigerant to restore cooling and verified proper system operation after service. A follow-up refrigerant leak search is planned. Repair and replacement options will be provided based on the findings.

Gonzales, LA

AC Refrigerant Restriction Cleared and Cooling Restored

Diagnosed high head pressure and low suction pressure caused by a severe refrigerant restriction at the evaporator coil piston connection. Pumped the system down, removed the piston, and cleared the restriction with nitrogen. Replaced the liquid-line filter drier, pressure-tested the system for leaks, and pulled a deep vacuum. Recharged the system with 3.5 pounds of refrigerant, adjusted the charge to the target superheat, and verified proper cooling operation.

Denham Springs, LA

Severely Clogged Evaporator Coil Cleaning on Brown Road

Responded to a rental property in Denham Springs for an air-conditioning system that was freezing up. Inspection found the evaporator coil heavily impacted with dirt and debris caused by inadequate filtration. The coil was initially cleaned with a wire brush and foaming coil cleaner. Because airflow remained restricted and refrigerant readings were still low, a water hose was connected to the indoor washing-machine hookup and the evaporator coil was thoroughly washed in place. After the deeper cleaning, airflow improved and the system’s refrigerant readings showed significant improvement. Recommended correcting or upgrading the return-air filtration setup to help prevent recurring coil buildup, freezing, reduced cooling performance, and repeat service calls.

Denham Springs, LA

Rooftop Goodman Package Unit Repair at Bethesda Behavioral Health

Inspected three rooftop HVAC systems. Found a failed 40/10 µF dual run capacitor on a Goodman electric package unit. The failed capacitor had leaked, preventing the compressor from starting and causing the condenser fan motor to run backward. Replaced the dual run capacitor and verified normal cooling operation. Cleared a clogged condensate drain on a second rooftop unit and reattached a disconnected drain line on the third unit. Verified that all three systems are draining properly. Recommended quarterly commercial HVAC maintenance to help reduce drain blockages, electrical failures, and unexpected cooling interruptions.

Baton Rouge, LA

Outdoor AC Low-Voltage Wiring Repair

Repaired chewed low-voltage wiring near the outdoor AC unit. Re-spliced the damaged wiring, insulated the repair with electrical tape, and secured it with zip ties to keep it safely away from contact.

Gonzales, LA

Commercial AC Freeze-Up Repaired at SA Recycling

Responded to SA Recycling on Airline Highway after the system repeatedly froze up. Instead of recommending immediate replacement, corrected the underlying problems. Replaced the stamped return grille with a return filter grille, thoroughly cleaned the evaporator coil, blower, condenser coil, and drain pan, blew out the condensate drain, replaced the failed fan relay on the control board, and installed a new two-pole contactor.

Prairieville, LA

Storm-Related AC Electrical Repairs and Surge Protection

Responded after recent storms and diagnosed a failed hard-start kit, a weak run capacitor, and a shorted condenser control board. Replaced the control board, hard-start kit, and capacitor, then installed a surge protector to help protect the outdoor unit from future electrical surges.

Baton Rouge, LA

Failed Capacitor and Burned Common Wire Repaired

Diagnosed a failed, heavily rusted condenser capacitor with a burned common wire connection. The electrical failure caused the condenser fan to rotate backward. Repaired the wiring connection and replaced the failed capacitor.

French Settlement, LA

Reversing Valve Plug Reattached After Second-Opinion Diagnosis

Provided a second opinion on a proposed capacitor replacement. Tested the 30/5 µF capacitor at 29.2/5 µF and determined replacement was not needed. Found the 24-volt plug for the reversing valve had vibrated loose, causing the system to operate in heat-pump mode. Reattached the plug.

30-Amp Fuses Found on Condenser Rated for Up to 55 Amps

Diagnosed an outdoor condenser operating with higher-than-normal compressor amperage. Testing found the 80/5 µF run capacitor was weak and the existing hard-start kit was worn. Replaced both components with a new 80/5 µF capacitor and a properly sized 3.5–5 ton three-wire hard-start kit. Compressor amperage improved from approximately 27–35 amps to 21–23 amps after the repair. Also found 30-amp fuses installed in the outdoor disconnect even though the condenser nameplate allowed a maximum fuse size of 55 amps. Correcting the fuse setup was scheduled for a later visit at no additional charge and was not completed during this visit.

Denham Springs, LA

Failed Hard-Start Kit Replaced on AC Condenser

Diagnosed a failed hard-start kit on the outdoor AC unit and installed a replacement. After installation, the compressor still measured 51 amps of inrush current. The technician noted that this unit is factory-equipped with a hard-start kit.

Denham Springs, LA

Dual Return-Air Setup in Spray-Foam Attic

Inspected two HVAC systems in a spray-foamed home and found both systems drawing return air from the living space and the attic. Documented the setup, which is being used to help remove humidity from both areas, and noted the importance of humidity control in spray-foamed homes.
