It is frustrating to hear your air conditioner running all afternoon while watching the indoor temperature slowly rise.
This is especially common during hot, humid Louisiana weather. A homeowner may set the thermostat to 72°F, but by late afternoon the house has climbed to 76°F, 78°F, or higher. The air conditioner may still be running, but it no longer seems able to keep up.
Sometimes the system is simply dealing with an unusually heavy heat load. Other times, rising indoor temperatures are an early warning sign of an airflow, refrigerant, electrical, drainage, or equipment problem.
Here is how to tell the difference.
Is It Normal for an AC to Run Constantly on a Very Hot Day?
During extreme afternoon heat, it can be normal for an air conditioner to run for long periods. Your home is absorbing heat through the roof, windows, walls, doors, attic, and ductwork while the system is trying to remove that heat.
Louisiana humidity also adds to the workload. Your air conditioner must remove both heat and moisture from the indoor air. Problems involving indoor air quality and humidity can make a home feel uncomfortable even when the air conditioner is running.

Keep plants and stored items away from the condenser. Avoid opening electrical panels or spraying water around electrical components.
A condenser coil that is deeply packed with dirt may need professional cleaning.
4. The Evaporator Coil Is Frozen
Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil can severely reduce cooling and airflow.
Possible causes include:
A dirty filter
Low airflow
A blower problem
Low refrigerant
A refrigerant leak
A restricted metering device
If you see ice, turn the cooling system off and allow it to thaw. Continuing to run a frozen system may make the problem worse.

5. The System Is Low on Refrigerant

Will Turning the Thermostat Lower Make the House Cool Faster?

Setting the thermostat from 74°F down to 65°F does not normally make the air coming from the vents colder. It simply tells the system to continue running until the lower setting is reached.
If the AC is already running continuously, lowering the setting will not increase its cooling capacity.
Choose a reasonable temperature and leave it steady while you determine whether the system is maintaining the home.
