Why This Geismar Upstairs AC Was Not Keeping Up

An upstairs air-conditioning system can be running without delivering the cooling the homeowner expects. During this recent HVAC service call in Geismar, Louisiana, we found that the problem was not caused by one single issue.

The upstairs living area had originally been attic space before being converted into conditioned rooms. Direct Answer: Why Was the Upstairs AC Struggling?

The upstairs system was struggling because conditioned air was not reaching every room properly, while a dirty condenser coil caused excessively high discharge pressure.

We corrected the accessible airflow restrictions, cleaned the outdoor condenser coil, checked refrigerant performance, and adjusted the refrigerant charge after the system stabilized.

Closed Registers Were Restricting Airflow

When we arrived, the doors to the upstairs rooms were closed, and approximately two or three of the six supply registers were completely shut.

Closing several supply registers does not always redirect the air where the homeowner wants it. Instead, it can increase resistance within the duct system and reduce total system airflow.

We recommended keeping the supply registers fully open and leaving the interior doors open whenever practical. This allows air to move from the supply vents back toward the system’s return and helps reduce room-to-room temperature and humidity differences.


A Closed Duct Damper Was Blocking Air to One Room

Some of the upstairs supplies had little to no airflow.

Because this space had been converted from an attic, access around the ductwork was extremely limited. We inserted a phone camera into an accessible section of flexible duct and found an internal balancing damper completely closed.

An access opening was cut into the supply plenum so the accessible dampers could be reached and opened. Once the identified closed damper was opened, airflow returned to the affected supply.

A closed damper, crushed flexible duct, disconnected duct, leaking connection, or restricted branch can leave one room significantly warmer than the others even while the air conditioner itself is operating.

The Dirty Condenser Coil Was Driving the Pressure Too High

The airflow problem was not the only condition affecting cooling.

When we checked the refrigerant system, the discharge pressure was extremely high for the outdoor temperature. The high-side pressure reached approximately 406 psig, with an outdoor temperature of only about 82°F.

The condenser coil was thoroughly cleaned to remove the buildup restricting outdoor airflow.

After cleaning, the high-side pressure dropped to approximately 348 psig before refrigerant was added. That significant reduction showed that the dirty coil had been preventing the system from releasing heat efficiently.

A dirty condenser coil can cause:

  • Elevated compressor operating pressure

  • Higher electrical demand

  • Reduced cooling efficiency

  • Longer system run times

  • Fluctuating refrigerant readings

  • Increased compressor stress

  • Difficulty keeping up during warm weather

The fluctuating superheat readings observed before cleaning were likely being affected by the excessive discharge pressure and changing refrigerant feed through the system’s fixed metering device.


Refrigerant Performance Was Checked After Cleaning

Refrigerant should not be adjusted while a dirty condenser coil is creating abnormal operating conditions. Cleaning the coil first allowed us to evaluate the system more accurately.

After the condenser was cleaned and the unit had operated, the superheat was found above the calculated target, indicating that the evaporator was not being fed as fully as expected.

We added 1 pound of R-410A refrigerant and rechecked system operation. Refrigerant feeding improved substantially, and the system was operating much closer to its intended range when we completed the visit.

This is why a proper air-conditioning repair diagnosis should involve more than connecting gauges and immediately adding refrigerant. Airflow, coil condition, outdoor temperature, indoor conditions, metering-device type, and equipment operation must all be considered.
