AC Drain Overflow and Low Refrigerant in Pelican Point

An air-conditioning system in the Pelican Point subdivision of Gonzales, Louisiana, developed two separate problems: condensate water was overflowing from an open drain stack, and the system was significantly low on R-410A refrigerant.

Air Innovations cleared the clogged drain with pressurized nitrogen, corrected the overflow point, added refrigerant to restore temporary cooling, and scheduled a refrigerant leak search so the homeowner could receive clear repair and replacement options.


Why Was Water Overflowing From the AC Drain Stack?

An air conditioner removes moisture from indoor air as it cools the home. That moisture collects inside the evaporator coil drain pan and normally leaves through the primary condensate drain.

At this Pelican Point home, the condensate drain and P-trap became clogged. An open vertical tee in the drain piping provided a low point where water could spill out before the system’s drainage protection worked as intended.

Water was overflowing from the open stack and entering the emergency drain pan beneath the equipment.

We cleared the condensate line using pressurized nitrogen to remove the blockage and restore drainage. We then capped the open stack so water could no longer escape from that location.

Should another blockage occur, the water will be more likely to reach the emergency drain pan, where the installed safety switch can shut the system down and help prevent continued water damage.

The System Was Also Low on R-410A Refrigerant

After correcting the drainage problem, we checked the system’s refrigerant pressures and temperatures.

The initial readings showed:

  • 36.4°F of superheat

  • 2°F of subcooling

  • Approximately 120 PSIG suction pressure

  • Approximately 338 PSIG discharge pressure

The combination of high superheat and very low subcooling indicated that the evaporator coil was being starved of refrigerant and the system was undercharged.

The outdoor unit’s data plate called for approximately 8°F of design subcooling, while the system was measuring only 2°F.


Refrigerant Was Added to Restore Temporary Cooling

We added five pounds of R-410A refrigerant to restore system operation temporarily.

After the refrigerant was added and the system stabilized, the readings improved to approximately:

  • 10.9°F of superheat

  • 2°F of subcooling

  • Approximately 143 PSIG suction pressure

  • Approximately 351 PSIG discharge pressure

The improved superheat showed that the evaporator coil was receiving refrigerant more effectively and that the system was cooling at the completion of service.

However, adding refrigerant does not permanently repair a leak.


Does Low Refrigerant Always Mean There Is a Leak?

Air-conditioning systems do not normally consume refrigerant during operation. The refrigerant circulates continuously through a sealed system.

When a system is several pounds low, a leak is usually present somewhere in the refrigeration circuit. Possible leak locations include:

  • The evaporator coil

  • Refrigerant line connections

  • Service valves or Schrader cores

  • The outdoor condenser coil

  • Distributor tubes or the TXV assembly

The existing Trane evaporator coil was manufactured in 2009, making an evaporator coil leak a reasonable concern. However, the exact leak location must be confirmed before recommending a specific repair.

Possible Repair and Replacement Options

Depending on the location and severity of the leak, the homeowner may consider:

Repairing an Accessible Refrigerant Leak

A repair may make sense when the leak is located at an accessible braze joint, valve, or tubing connection and the remaining equipment is in suitable condition.

Replacing the Evaporator Coil

The existing system uses a horizontal slab-style evaporator coil. A compatible slide-in replacement may allow the leaking coil to be replaced without rebuilding the entire attic installation.

Replacing the Coil and Condenser

Replacing both refrigeration components may provide a matched indoor and outdoor system while allowing the existing furnace to remain, provided it is compatible and in serviceable condition.

Installing a Complete HVAC System

Because the existing equipment is approximately 16 years old, a complete system replacement should also be compared against the cost of repairing one major component while retaining other aging equipment.

Will a float switch stop an AC drain overflow?

Can an air conditioner run when it is low on refrigerant?
